FAQ's

What kind of therapy do you do?

Trauma informed, mind-body counseling.  More technically speaking, I use the following theoretical orientations: Polyvagal Theory, depth psychology--psychodynamic, Jungian, attachment.  I work with people and their relationships with themselves and others.  Mostly I use traditional "talk therapy," other times I use talk therapy and a psychologically oriented form of meditative movement called qigong--which is akin to tai chi.  Qigong helps people move through trauma and emotional, psychological and spiritual challenges.  It is great for supplementing traditional talk therapy with movement.  Qigong is also a great for alleviating symptoms that are traditionally treated with medication.

I talk and talk and talk and nothing ever happens.  Why?

Although talking alone can in many cases be curative, it can also lead to repetitive stories and unproductive conversations.  That is when the Polyvagal Approach to Trauma and the use of Archetypal Qigong in therapy can be really effective.  Polyvagal Theory helps you release the past and come into the safety of present reality. AQ helps relieve symptoms while offering a deeper transformation of their origin.  Understanding and changing the psyche is more possible when the body and mind work together.

I don’t think 12 sessions is enough, do you?

Some problems resolve relatively quickly, others take longer.  We are not mechanical beings and one size does not fit all.  If a thought pattern, issue, or feeling has been with you for a while it may take more than 12 sessions to resolve.  Some components in the psyche need to be approached gently and unraveled slowly.  We will find the right length of therapy for you.  There is no limit to the number of sessions.

What is Depth Psychology?

Depth Psychology is that branch of psychology that acknowledges that more goes on within the psyche than we are consciously aware of.  An iceberg is an image often used to illustrate the true nature of the psyche with the part above the water representing conscious awareness, and the much larger part beneath representing the sub-conscious and the unconscious.

“This above all: to thine own self be true.”

-William Shakespeare

The people I work with seek counseling because they realize something could be better. There is a part in all of us that knows how to best take care of ourselves. It is that part that brings us to therapy and guides us through the changes we need.
